Getting your teen comfortable on the road starts with the regular, everyday routes. Some of these routes can include the drive to school, the drive to the nearest gas station, the route to the busiest intersections, and the route home.

Reminders on Distracted Driving

Keeping your teen’s attention on the road is one of the first things you should review with them. Even the quickest scroll or text on their phone, reaching for a snack, or changing a song can take their eyes off the road for one second too long. The best way to avoid distracted driving is to remind them to set their phone to ‘Do Not Disturb’.

Scan for Pedestrians

Getting used to driving takes time, especially when you’re having to scan for any additional hazards on top of it. As you get closer to school, remind your teen to watch for students, especially children, crossing the street unexpectedly. When they see a school bus stop, they should:

• Come to a complete stop when they see the red lights flashing and its stop sign extending.
• Not continue to drive until the flashing red lights turn off and the stop sign closes.
